Obesity rates are higher in populations of color, and access to care is generally worse in communities with higher rates of obesity. The high cost of anti-obesity medications as well as lack of insurance coverage for obesity care are also two major barriers to access. Since different treatment strategies work better or worse in different populations, it’s really important that we have providers who are culturally competent and can work with a diverse population of patients. So not only do we need to train more providers to provide evidence-based, comprehensive obesity treatment, we really need clinicians who are culturally competent and know how to speak to different patient populations and offer different treatment approaches to different populations.
