The epidemiology of alopecia areata, like many other diseases, can be difficult to study. But one thing that seems pretty clear, based on the published data so far, is that patients with skin of color are disproportionately affected by alopecia areata. And I think it's probably true that even this reflects an under-diagnosis so far, and it may be even more disparate than is currently appreciated. Because of that, I think it's very important that clinicians pay attention to the fact that patients of color may be affected by alopecia areata, and pay attention that there is not misdiagnosis in terms of other causes of hair loss. So that way, treat treatment approaches are appropriately directed to treating the underlying alopecia areata.
