In this Healio video exclusive, Leonard Calabrese, DO, chief medical editor of Healio Rheumatology, breaks down top items from the March issue, including a roundtable on “surging” autoimmunity in the general population.

“We have a great cast of experts weighing in on what could be causing this,” Calabrese said. “Can you say COVID-19?”

The story includes perspectives from expert panelists Anca D. Askanase, MD, MPH; Cassandra Calabrese, DO; Frederick W. Miller, MD, PhD; and Andrew Wang, MD, PhD.

In his accompanying editorial, Calabrese explores the ways in which lifestyle, behavioral and environmental factors that seem far afield from clinical practice are in fact “now closely entwined” with it. He also advocates for the evolving practice of integrative rheumatology.

Other highlights from the March issue include some “good news” on streamlining prior authorizations, Calabrese said. He also pointed out coverage of a “very provocative” new drug granted FDA breakthrough designation — an opioid with built-in overdose protection.

“There’s a lot to talk about it in rheumatology right now,” Calabrese said. “Join us and tell us what you’re thinking.”
