VIDEO: Immunocompromised care in COVID-19 to challenge physicians ‘for rest of our lives’

DESTIN, Fla. — All patients who are immunocompromised should be educated about how to recognize COVID-19 infection early and when to report to the emergency room, according to Leonard H. Calabrese, DO, at the Congress of Clinical Rheumatology East.
These patients also require access to home testing, as many of the available COVID-19 therapies, including antivirals and monoclonal antibodies, are “time limited” and will be ineffective if administered several weeks after infection, he added.
“We’re rheumatologists — this is the type of patient we take care of,” said Calabrese, who is chief medical editor of Healio Rheumatology, a professor of medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, and RJ Fasenmyer chair of clinical immunology at the Cleveland Clinic. “This will be a challenge that is prevalent with us for the rest of our lives, because COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 infection, is unlikely to leave the planet.”
