In this video, Jeffrey A. Sparks, MD, MMSc, associate physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital, spoke with Healio about a cross-sectional study presented at ACR 2020 that delved into the “lipid paradox.”

Among individuals in the general population, high levels of LDL confer a greater risk for cardiovascular disease compared with a low risk if the LDL level is low. However, patients with rheumatoid arthritis who also have low levels of LDL are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. This is what is known as the lipid paradox, according to Sparks, who also serves as assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

He advised that other clinicians managing patients with RA be aware of, and understand, the lipid paradox to better monitor and manage patients.

“And, obviously, we need to understand how to reverse that because this is a real issue for our patients,” he said.
