Key takeaways:
- For intertrochanteric femur fractures, be aware of the lateral wall.
- For subtrochanteric femur fractures, utilize clamp-assisted reductions in an overlay format to facilitate reduction and efficiency in the OR.
WAILEA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Derek J. Donegan, MD, shared five tips for the treatment of hip and femur fractures.
“For intertrochanteric femur fractures, be aware of the lateral wall. If there is a thin lateral wall, be sure to move to an intramedullary implant,” Donegan said.
Donegan also said other tips include not to forget about the nail-canal mismatch. For subtrochanteric femur fractures, utilize clamp-assisted reductions in an overlay format to facilitate reduction and efficiency in the OR, he said. Additionally, it is important to get femoral rotation correct.
“Remember there are multiple different methods to use, but you can use a lesser troch profile, nail overlap, as well as designs of implants, to help with rotation,” Donegan said.
The last tip was to optimize distal femur fixation with many different methods.
