Key takeaways:

  • Former NFL players may have a variety of conditions that affect physical and mental function.
  • Conditions such as sleep apnea and chronic pain may be as significant as concussions and head trauma.

In this video from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Meeting, Adam Tenforde, MD, discussed the variety of conditions that can impact the physical and mental well-being of former athletes.

“If you’re taking care of a former NFL player, or a former athlete for that matter, you shouldn’t assume that the sport alone is going to result in just one type of medical condition and impairment,” Tenforde said. “While concussions and head trauma are clearly of clinical concern, we were identifying that individuals with treatable conditions, such as sleep apnea, or those that perhaps have untreated chronic pain may also be suffering from worse physical or mental function and could benefit from more targeted strategies to help those individuals have the best quality of life possible,” he added.
