WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Andrew R. Hsu, MD, stressed the importance of the deltoid ligament for healing of ankle fractures and restoration of syndesmotic stability.

“Many of us have been taught that the deltoid ligament will heal by itself and scar in along the medial side of the ankle, but I think more research is now showing that there is often times avulsion, rupture or complete disfunction of the deltoid ligament in the setting of ankle fractures,” he said. “The goal is to restore the medial structures, which not only improves syndesmotic stability, but also leads to decreased incidences of medial-sided ankle pain after ankle fracture.”
