Key takeaways:

  • There are effective new options for scleral fixation of IOLs, including widely used flanged techniques.
  • These techniques can be used to explant or to re-fixate an IOL.

VILAMOURA, Portugal — At the ESCRS winter meeting, Michael Amon, MD, speaks about the latest techniques for intrascleral fixation of IOLs in cases that lack capsular support.

He gives details on some of the most recent sutureless techniques, such as the Yamane technique of flanged intrascleral fixation and the Canabrava double-flanged technique, which can be used to exchange a lens but also to re-fixate a lens.

“There are a lot of options now ... and they work very well, but you have to decide whether to exchange a lens or keep it and re-fixate it, depending on the status of the lens itself,” he said.
