PHILADELPHIA — Ensuring underrepresented populations come to the forefront of academic and clinical concerns in the field of neurology is key to advancing the specialty, according to a speaker at the American Neurological Association annual meeting.
“Even though our most common, our most severe diseases in neurology, are heavily overrepresented among populations that are minoritized, the workforce is heavily underrepresented by those same individuals,” Roy H. Hamilton, MD, MS, professor and vice chair for inclusion and diversity in the department of neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, said in this Healio video.
Hamilton asserted that increasing diversity and representation in the field is critical for advancing health equity, increasing creativity and improving quality of work by teams of neurologists.
One of the main challenges for those wishing to increase diversity in the specialty, Hamilton revealed, is the need to foster qualities in those who would be able take leadership roles in the academic and clinical spheres.
