CHICAGO — Roy H. Hamilton, MD, MS, discusses a symposium at the 2022 American Neurological Association’s annual meeting that focused on Alzheimer’s disease and MS and the disproportionate burden that underrepresented groups experience.
“All of our common and most debilitating neurological disorders disproportionately affect marginalized, often minoritized, groups of individuals,” Hamilton, professor of neurology and vice chair for inclusion and diversity at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, said. “There has been an increase in the degree to which the field of neurology has become aware of this, has been able to document, characterize and understand the root of these disparities. But neurology also has to be a field that leads in developing interventions, policies and stances that can move the needle with respect to disparities and promote health equity.”
