CHICAGO — Stephen Reich, MD, professor of neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, spoke at ANA 2022 about clinical features of functional movement disorders and how to best identify them.
“The most important point that I wanted to stress is that functional movement disorders — which historically have been called psychogenic movement disorders — are diagnosed based on the presence of positive criteria,” he said. “It’s not simply a ‘rule out other things’ diagnosis. If there are specific features from the history and the examination — [these] are clues that the patient has a functional movement disorder.”
