Experts who take care of people with endocrine issues will gather in San Diego to discuss the latest advancements in clinical endocrinology at the 31st annual meeting of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology.

This year’s conference is the first AACE annual meeting to take place in-person since 2019. After canceling its 2020 conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic and hosting its 2021 meeting virtually, AACE will convene the 2022 event at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront from Thursday to Saturday.

“It is exciting that this meeting will be the first in-person AACE annual meeting since 2019,” Angela M. Leung, MD, associate professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, and program chair of the AACE annual meeting, told Healio. “We put a lot of work and thought into how to make this more engaging than normal because it is representing the first time in a long time that we’re fully convening with in-person learning.”

This year’s program will feature 3 days of in-person educational programming, including six disease-specific plenary talks and corresponding year-in-review summaries; a learning zone with interactive activities; meet-up and industry education zones; nearly 400 poster, oral and late-breaking abstracts; more than 22 hours of CME, nursing and pharmacy credits; and more than 55 hours of on-demand learning for additional credits.

The return to an in-person meeting format has led to a focus on more interactive sessions this year. On Thursday at 3 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, there will be a session on education and leadership in endocrinology. Moderated by David C. Lieb, MD, FACE, FACP, associate professor of internal medicine and program director of the endocrinology and metabolism fellowship program at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and chair of the AACE Education Oversight Committee, the session will include three 30-minute presentations focused on starting a leadership club within one’s institution or clinic, teaching tips for the busy clinician educator and a presentation on health equity curriculum for endocrinologists.

“The curriculum was developed by the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism,” Lieb told Healio. “It’s the first time it’s being presented at a meeting.”

On Thursday at 5 p.m. PDT, there will be a Women’s Leadership Session in which a panel of women from AACE will discuss their job roles and career stages. A reception will take place after the session.

“We’ve assembled five different panelists representing all different career stages and representation within AACE, from younger, newly added fellowship folks up to senior leadership,” Leung said. “They’re also representing folks in private practice, academia, the military and program director roles.”

Another interactive event will be a roundtable discussion on diabetes diets on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PDT. Martin M. Grajower, MD, FACP, FACE, of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, will speak about time-restricted diets, and Amy Fischl, MS, RDN, LDN, BC-ADM, CDCES, of the University of Chicago, will discuss keto diets.

Other featured sessions for this year’s conference include the following:

  • On Thursday at 8:15 a.m. PDT, the conference will kick off with a talk from keynote speaker C. Nicole Swiner, MD, from Durham Family Medicine in North Carolina. Swiner’s talk, titled “Self-Care for the Medical Provider During a Global Pandemic,” will focus on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected providers’ ability to achieve work-life balance and discuss strategies.
  • At 1:30 p.m. PDT on Thursday, AACE will present its updated fatty liver guidelines for 2022. The 75-minute presentation will focus on the prevalence and complications of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in the U.S. and globally, diagnostic tools for the two conditions and current and future therapies.
  • Several hands-on skills workshops are new to this year’s program. On Thursday at 1 p.m. PDT, attendees will learn about the thyroid anatomy and ultrasound physics and learn how to perform a comprehensive ultrasound of the neck during the Thyroid Ultrasound Skills Training Workshop. On Friday at 1:30 p.m. PDT there will be a diabetes technology workshop focused on insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. Both workshops require pre-registration and include a $75 supplies charge.

“I’m excited for our abstract, e-posters and oral presentations,” Lieb said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come and present their research, their case presentations and case series of interesting patients. I love walking through the halls, looking at the posters and hearing people speak, especially learners, residents and endocrinology fellows.”

Healio will provide coverage live from AACE 2022, including reports on the sessions, on-site video interviews and more. For more information on the AACE agenda and registration, visit https://pro.aace.com/events/2022/annual-meeting.
