NEW ORLEANS — In this video exclusive, Jonathan D. Leffert, MD, talks with Jyothi Mamidi Juarez, MD, ECNU, about using a virtual system and AI to optimize and modernize an endocrinology practice.

Leffert is managing partner at North Texas Endocrine Center, a past president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology and a Healio | Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member. Juarez is an endocrinologist and owner of Partners in Endocrinology in Friendswood, Texas.

Digitizing as many aspects of a practice as possible can improve efficiency and also save time and money, according to Juarez. She discussed the benefits of hiring a virtual assistant and how shifting fax and phone systems to online can allow an assistant to manage the day-to-day operations of a practice from anywhere.

“When patients come to the office, I don’t have a big need for excess in-person staffing because everything’s been done ahead of time remotely,” Juarez said.

Juarez said AI is also playing a role in practice management today. AI tools can help providers take notes during visits, manage data and respond to portal messages from patients. Some electronic medical record systems already have AI tools implemented, according to Juarez.

“I think in a matter of 6 months to a year, [using AI] will be standard protocol for most practices and with the AI scribing, it really saves a lot of time with notes,” Juarez said.
