In this Healio video exclusive, Leonard Calabrese, DO, chief medical editor of Healio Rheumatology, shouts out key stories in the August issue, including an in-depth cover on language barriers as a major driver of health care disparities.

“We implicitly think this is important, but this is a deep dive into patients who are limited by language and how we can overcome these barriers,” Calabrese said. “I think it’s really terrific.”

The story includes perspectives from Norma Poll-Hunter, PhD; Vinicius Domingues, MD; Joel Hirsh, MDJillian Rose-Smith, PhD, MPH; Bella Elogoodin, MBA; and Santiago Munoz Perez, MSc, BSc.

Calabrese also highlighted an interview with Ryan Thwaites, PhD, of Imperial College London, regarding unique immune features shared among long COVID patients that may have implications for future treatment.

“It’s a vast minority, I know, but some of these insights are really quite interesting,” he said.

The August issue also features an editorial by Calabrese evaluating a recently proposed definition of long COVID. Additional stories cover recent data on sweetened beverages and gout, Paxlovid for long COVID and other emerging research.

“Please pick it up online or in print,” Calabrese said. “I’d love to hear your thoughts.”
