In this video exclusive, Leonard Calabrese, DO, chief medical editor of Healio Rheumatology, highlights what he describes as “an outstanding roundtable” in the June issue on advanced practice providers’ expanding role in rheumatology care.

“The relationship between practitioners, physicians and APPs is still an evolving one,” Calabrese said. “I think when it’s working at its best, it really works out best for the patient.”

The cover story covers the ups and downs of APPs’ growing footprint in rheumatology as their numbers continue to boom, growing 141% between 2009 and 2020. It includes perspectives from Kenneth G. Saag, MD, and Jeffrey Curtis, MD, MS, MPH, of the University of Alabama, Birmingham; as well as Christine Stamatos, DNP, ANP-C, director of the Fibromyalgia Long Covid Clinic in New York and Amanda Mixon, PA-C, founder of the association Rheumatology Advanced Practice Providers.

Calabrese’s editorial this month also addresses APPs, covering “my own experience with this, going back now several decades,” he said.
