In this Healio video, Philip J. Mease, MD, discusses ongoing clinical trials in psoriatic arthritis and data presented at ACR Convergence 2023, as well as upcoming research.

“We know that there are difficult to manage issues in patients, for example, if they have concomitant fibromyalgia, they may have elevated pain or fatigue scores as a result of that condition and not necessarily have layer of their imminent biologic disease,” said Mease, who is director of rheumatology research at the Swedish Medical Center/Providence St. Joseph Health in Washington. “There may be depression that influences their outcomes and so on, so that I would call difficult to manage, but we're always then struggling, what do we do if the patient has tried everything and, in our clinic, we're beginning to do more combination therapies off label in which perhaps one of us a rheumatologist will prescribe one medication.”

Mease noted that several groups, including the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis, are working toward defining “difficult to manage” and “difficult to treat” PsA, and he looks forward to seeing these definitions in the coming year.

“As this kind of definition comes out, it will help guide clinicians in the future, as well as guiding companies who are designing studies to look at, for example, combination therapies,” he said.
