Impacting roughly 1 million to 4 million Americans, Sjögren’s syndrome is estimated to be one of the most common autoimmune diseases in the United States, according to the Sjögren’s Foundation.

However, despite how relatively common it is, awareness of the disease among the general public lags behind that of other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or type 1 diabetes.

April is Sjögren’s Awareness Month, and to bring awareness and understanding to the disease, the Sjögren’s Foundation is running a campaign to help tell the stories of patients with the disease. Each day, a different patient is highlighted on the foundation’s twitter feed and website, giving patients with Sjögren’s syndrome the chance to have their voices heard.

In honor of the month and to bring further awareness to the disease, Healio Rheumatology has compiled five recent stories dealing with Sjögren’s syndrome.
