AWIR 2nd Annual Immunology Bootcamp Part 1: TNF and IL-6 Biology and Inhibitors
Chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, vasculitis and axial spondyloarthritis, represent a group of clinically heterogenous disorders that share a similar immunopathology. Untreated immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) can lead to devastating consequences. This educational activity, led by an expert rheumatologist, addresses the underlying pathogenesis of IMIDs and the utilization of TNF and IL-6 inhibitors.
Pretest:
1. Which of the following is not an effect of TNF in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis?
- A. Activates B-cells to produce antibodies directed against cartilage.
- B. Activates monocytes to secrete IL-1.
- C. Activates synovial fibroblasts to secrete IL-6.
- D. Activates endothelial cells to produce surface adhesion molecules.
2. For which of the following rheumatologic conditions is sarilumab approved?
- A. Psoriasis.
- B. Temporal Arteritis.
- C. Sarcoidosis.
- D. Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
- Examine the underlying pathology of chronic immune-mediated inflammatory conditions and resulting clinical implications.
- Review the immunological targets of available and emerging immune-based therapies.
- Select treatment for patients with IMID based on the latest clinical evidence and patient characteristics.
