SAN DIEGO – Patients with spondyloarthropathies appear to be at higher risk for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, according to results presented at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting.

Beth L. Jonas, MD, FACR, professor of medicine and interim chief of the division of rheumatology, allergy and immunology in the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at UNC, describes the findings from two studies. The first included patients with either spondyloarthritis, malignancy or osteoarthritis; the second enrolled patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

“The incidence of DVT and PE was higher in patients with spondyloarthropathies … in both the inpatient and the outpatient setting,” Jonas said.
