VIDEO: Lupus develops as result of 'perfect storm'

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the Rheumatology Nurses Society Annual Conference, Monica Richey, MSN, ANP-BC/GNP, spoke about lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome. She said it is important that rheumatology health care providers understand there is a “perfect storm” that develops this disease. Richey said there are currently more than 126 known genes involved in the development of lupus, in addition to the role that sex hormones and the environment, such as emotional stress, pregnancy and drugs, have in the development of lupus. VIDEO: Opioids should not be used to treat patients with fibromyalgia

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the Rheumatology Nurses Society Annual Conference, Susan K. Chrostowski, DNP, APRN, ANP-C, spoke about diagnostic measures for fibromyalgia. She said practitioners should avoid the use of opioids in patients with fibromyalgia. Chrostowski said practitioners must validate patients’ symptoms, set goals and help them achieve their best quality of life. Watch Video.

VIDEO: Reactions to rituximab rare, but may happen during first infusion

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the Rheumatology Nurses Society Annual Conference, Vickie L. Sayles, BSN, CRNI, RN-BC, spoke about patient reactions to rituximab (Rituxan; Genentech, Biogen). She said reactions do not happen often. However, when these occur during the first infusion, reactions can be managed with diphenhydramine or corticosteroids. After the first infusion, reactions can still occur but are rare, she said. Watch Video.
