Patients with tophaceous gout presented with urate deposition, tophus, vascularization in Achilles tendon

In the Achilles tendon of patients with tophaceous gout, researchers found urate deposition, tophus and vascularization, according to results of a recently published study.
“Our findings demonstrate that, compared with age- and sex-matched control participants, people with tophaceous gout have both disease-specific and nonspecific features, including a higher prevalence of tophus, intratendinous power Doppler signal and intratendinous hyperechoic spots,” the researchers wrote. “Despite these findings, structural damage in the Achilles tendon was minimal in participants with gout.”
Investigators assessed 24 patients with tophaceous gout and 24 healthy controls. Researchers found tophus deposition in 73% of those with gout and in none of the controls. In addition, intratendinous hyperechoic spots and intratendinous power Doppler signal occurred more often in patients with gout compared with controls. Furthermore, hyperechoic spots occurred more commonly at insertion compared with the zone proximal to the mid-section. – by Will Offit
