Large amount of monosodium urate crystals found in patients with axial spondyloarthritis without gout

Large amounts of monosodium urate crystals were found in the pelvis of patients with axial spondyloarthritis, according to a recently published analysis.
Researchers assessed 186 patients with axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) without gout.
They found large quantities of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals at the pelvis of these patients. The average MSU volume was 0.902 at the left sacroiliac joint, 1.074 at the right sacroiliac joint and 5.272 at the pelvis, which all correlated with serum uric acid concentration (r = 0.727). In addition, they found AxSpA duration, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index score and MSU crystal volume at both joint sides were linked with radiographic grade progression at the sacroiliac joints. – by Will A.
