A history of uveitis had a negative effect on vision-related quality of life in adulthood for patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, according to recently published data.

Anne-Mieke J.W. Haasnoot, MD, in the Department of Ophthalmology at Utrecht University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and colleagues assessed 31 adults with a history of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and chronic anterior uveitis as well as 51 adult patients with JIA, but not uveitis. Researchers examined patient quality of life (QoL) with the following three questionnaires: National Eye Institute visual functioning questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25); SF-36; and EuroQoL-5D (EQ-5D).

The median overall composite score (OCS) for NEI VFQ-25 was significantly worse for patients with uveitis compared with patients without uveitis (83.4 vs. 94.9). After adjustment for arthritis duration, investigators found JIA subtype, arthritis onset before or after 1990 and systemic immunomodulatory medication use, the QoL remained significantly worse in the uveitis group. However, investigators found no significant differences between the study groups regarding the SF-36 and EQ-5D. – by Will Offit
