Findings support further study of skin component in MDA status for PsA

Recently published results showed that although a minority of patients with psoriatic arthritis who fulfilled the minimal disease activity criteria had active joints, half had active skin.

Researchers assessed all components of the minimal disease activity score in 83 patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Overall, 41 patients fulfilled five out of seven minimal disease activity criteria and were classified as having minimal disease activity.

Results showed 7.4% of patients who fulfilled the minimal disease activity criteria did not satisfy the joint count criteria, while 51% of patients who fulfilled the minimal disease activity criteria fulfilled the skin criteria. Researchers noted 51% of patients with minimal disease activity fulfilled both the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index and the body surface area criteria, 54% fulfilled the Psoriasis Area Severity Index criteria alone and 66% fulfilled the body surface area criteria alone. Patients with minimal disease activity less frequently fulfilled the patient’s pain score, according to results. Researchers found patient pain score (100%), the patient’s global assessment (76.5%) and the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (65%) were more often unfulfilled by the 42 patients who did not fulfill minimal disease activity criteria. – by Casey Tingle
