EULAR releases recommendations for the care of patients with familial Mediterranean fever
EULAR released 18 evidence-based recommendations for the management of familial Mediterranean fever.
The first recommendation is to have a patient diagnosed with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) by a practitioner with experience in FMF. Immediate intervention with colchicine on diagnosis is preferred and received the highest grade of recommendation, and the goal of treatment is to completely control the disease and to minimize subclinical inflammation between attacks. The document also includes recommendations for dosing of colchicine and monitoring toxicity. Cessation of colchicine during pregnancy is not recommended.
The recommendations were developed by a multidisciplinary panel of members from the Eastern Mediterranean area, Europe and North America, and included rheumatologists, internists, pediatricians, a nurse, a methodologist and a patient representative. The authors concluded the guidelines should be revisited and updated again within 5 years. – by Shirley Pulawski
