VIDEO: Silverman discusses role of intestinal bacteria in development of systemic immune responses

SAN FRANCISCO — At the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting, Gregg J. Silverman, MD, of the Department of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine, spoke about modulators of systemic lupus erythematosus and the role intestinal bacteria has in the development of systemic immune responses and autoreactivity.

He said recent studies have shown that clinical systemic lupus erythematosus can be associated with microbiome imbalances. Future studies can be on how to use the immune system itself to suppress the potentially pathogenic bacteria, allow other bacteria to take over and reset the balance essential for good immune health.
