EULAR studies focus on vitamin D

Vitamin D has gained interest within many specialties, as well as in general practice. As such, the results of a number of studies focused on vitamin D in numerous rheumatic diseases were presented at the European League Against Rheumatism, or EULAR, Annual European Congress of Rheumatology.
Topics included cholecalciferol injections for patients with fibromyalgia, comorbidities and vitamin D, comparisons of vitamin D levels in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and in the general population, and comparisons between patients with different rheumatic diseases.

Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency high in patients with rheumatic, inflammatory bowel diseases
A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency was observed in patients with rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and polymyalgia rheumatica, as well as in patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, according to the results of a study presented at the European League Against Rheumatism Annual European Congress of Rheumatology. Cholecalciferol injection may reduce fatigue, musculoskeletal pain in patients with fibromyalgia
Patients with fibromyalgia may have improvements in fatigue and musculoskeletal pain by increasing vitamin D levels through monthly, intramuscular cholecalciferol injection, according to A EULAR presentation. Read more.
Vitamin D status similar in patients with ankylosing spondylitis, healthy controls
Vitamin D status was often low in the winter in patients with ankylosing spondylitis, but levels were comparable to serum levels found in healthy control participants and were not correlated with disease activity, according to researchers from the University of Gothenburg. Read more.
Fatigue, symptom severity may be linked to vitamin D deficiency in patients with fibromyalgia
Patients with fibromyalgia who were deficient in vitamin D were more likely to have higher scores for fatigue and poorer functional scores compared with individuals with fibromyalgia alone or with patients deficient in vitamin D without fibromyalgia, according to findings from a study of patients in Turkey. Low vitamin D, decreased bone mass prevalent among patients with PsA despite sun exposure
Vitamin D insufficiency was common among patients with psoriatic arthritis, among whom more than half had decreased bone mass, according to the findings of a study presented recently. Read more.
Study links daily cod-liver oil intake to lower BMI in patients with psoriatic arthritis
A significantly lower BMI was observed in patients with psoriatic arthritis who ingested cod liver on a daily basis but was not associated with consumption of sausages, hamburgers, rice, pasta or other foods, according to results of a study. Read more.
