Patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome were at a higher risk for depression, anxiety and sleep disorders than healthy individuals, according to the recently published study results.

Researchers studied 2,686 patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) and 10,744 control participants without SS identified through the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Patients with SS were diagnosed between Jan. 1, 2000, and Dec. 31, 2008, had a median age of 45.31 years and a median follow-up of 4.7 years. Each patient with SS was matched with four patients for age and sex. Patients with an existing diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder were excluded from either group.

Two hundred fifteen patients with SS and 475 control patients were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder during the follow-up period. Depression was the most common diagnosis in 85 patients with SS, followed by anxiety disorder in 67 patients and sleep disorder in 55 patients.

Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed patients with SS had a higher risk for developing depressive disorder, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.829, as well as anxiety disorder (HR = 1.856) and sleep disorder (HR = 1.967) compared with control participants after adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities, urbanization and income.

Further analyses showed age, sex and comorbidities were not associated with the risk for psychiatric disorders in patients with primary SS, according to the researchers.

The researchers concluded that patients with primary SS should be appropriately screened for psychiatric disorders starting at disease onset. - by Shirley Pulawski
