Rheumatoid Awareness Day focuses on ‘invisible disease’

The second annual Rheumatoid Awareness Day will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation has announced.

The nonprofit Rheumatoid Patient Foundation (RPF) established Rheumatoid Awareness Day in 2013 “to address the lack of awareness for rheumatoid arthritis … and resulting inadequacies in disability accommodations, clinical care, health care costs and research funding,” according to a press release. Patients in the US and Canada have worked to establish official proclamations for the event, with additional support evident in Europe and New Zealand, the release said.

“It’s exciting to be contacted by patients, organizations and even clinicians from around the world, asking how they can participate,” Kelly Young, RPF president, said in the release. “We know this is the beginning of something important — something permanent, to bring this invisible disease out of the shadows, driving much needed assistance and research.”

More information about becoming involved with Rheumatoid Awareness Day is located on the RPF website or by joining a Facebook event created for the day. John M. Davis III, MD, a rheumatologist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., is scheduled to participate in an online chat on Facebook as part of the event, the release said.
