SAN DIEGO — Research on dermatologic manifestations of fibromyalgia previously not reported was presented by Valerie Laniosz, MD, PhD, second-year dermatology resident at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., during the American College of Rheumatology annual meeting.
Laniosz and colleagues studied 845 patients seen at the Fibromyalgia Clinic at Mayo Clinic to look at skin findings from dermatologists, rheumatologists and primary care physicians. About one-third of patients reported excessive sweating. Other findings included burning of the skin and unusual sensations within the mouth.
“If [patients with fibromyalgia] report any unusual cutaneous complaints, it could be a manifestation of their fibromyalgia,” Laniosz concluded. “Providers who see patients with fibromyalgia may want to ask about symptoms in the skin as part of their review of systems.”
Disclosure: Laniosz reported no relevant financial disclosures.
