European Rheumatology Research Foundation launched at EULAR

The European Rheumatology Research Foundation announced its launch today in Madrid at the opening of the annual congress of the European League Against Rheumatism.

The foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization devoted to promoting research in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), according to a news release. The European Rheumatology Research Foundation (ERRF) will raise funds from commercial and noncommercial donors to support peer-reviewed research in an effort to reduce disease burden for patients with RMDs.

“The foundation aims to recognize research and innovation in the field of rheumatology, which is crucial for improving our understanding of the causes of and pathway to RMDs, as well as their prevention and management,” ERRF President Josef S. Smolen, MD, said. “By supporting basic and clinical research, the ERRF aims to improve the quality of life and socioeconomic conditions of more than 120 million Europeans living with RMDs.”

“Thanks to a donation from EULAR … we are in a position to call for research proposals in the field of osteoarthritis,” Paul Emery, MD, chair of the ERFF executive committee, said. “As the most common joint disorder in the world, and the leading cause of pain, disability and loss of function in adults, more research is needed to meet this significant unmet patient need.”
