NEW YORK — In this Healio Video Perspective from the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting, David Frederick, MD, discusses a workshop that aims to empower physicians to provide bias-free psychiatry teaching services.

Frederick helped design and present the “Bias at the Bedside: Recognizing Bias and Discrimination in Patients and Families” workshop, which uses roleplay to help participants learn to confront and cope with bias as it occurs. One of the goals of the workshop is to preserve physician wellness and prevent burnout, according to Frederick.

“We found that participants rated a higher level of confidence in their ability to recognize and assess bias when it occurs,” Frederick, medical director of Appleton at McLean Hospital and instructor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, told Healio.

“While we recognize that confidence is not the same as actually using the skills we teach in the workshop, we know that without high levels of confidence, these conversations will not happen,” he added.
