Key takeaways:

  • Administrators should understand the underlying problems with staff engagement at their institution.
  • Discussions on feelings about the workplace may shift workplace culture.

In this video from the Academic Orthopaedic Consortium Business & Leadership Symposium, Thomas Krupko, MD, discussed changes made at his institution that have shifted the culture regarding staff belonging and engagement.

“[Our staff] wanted to feel like they were part of something bigger than themselves. Making them feel that they were not just punching a time clock, they were part of something, we were helping people and they were critical in that [is what] most of our projects have revolved around,” Krupko, director of clinical operations for the University of Florida Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute, told Healio. “It is amazing how some of the small projects that we have accomplished easily have started to change the dynamic for us.”

According to Krupko, administrators should aim to understand any underlying problems with engagement in their institution and discuss these problems with staff members.

“Make sure you understand them, make sure they see you and know that you are there to support them,” Krupko said. “Then, you have to follow through. You have to make a plan and stick with it because most of these employees will give you one good shot to earn your trust and respect and if you drop that ball, you will have a lot of trouble in the future. But if you meet your goals, they will be more inclined to be positive and optimistic about the future.”
