Key takeaways:

  • Dynamic valgus of the ankle was corrected with a shortening of the distal tibia but tended to recur within 2 years.
  • Results showed tibial-fibular synostosis prevented recurrence of dynamic valgus of the ankle.

In this video, Aaron J. Huser, DO, discusses a study that showed tibial-fibular synostosis may prevent recurrent dynamic valgus of the ankle in patients with fibular hemimelia.

“What we believe is that because the proximal fibula in these patients may be weaker, by creating that synostosis, you take away the weak push and replace it with possibly a stronger push of the distal fibula, which is why it is able to sustain its position when it is connected to the tibia,” Huser, an orthopedic surgeon at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, told Healio about results presented at the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society Annual Meeting. “It is exciting, as we see that just doing the surgery without that may have caused recurrence.”

He added, “More information is required to let us know if this is a possible treatment option for these patients in preventing recurrence of the deformity.”
