The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has released an updated clinical practice guideline for the management of carpal tunnel syndrome, according to a press release.

The new guideline, which was last updated in 2016, is centered around the latest evidence-based research and recommendations on carpal tunnel diagnosis, treatment and postoperative care, according to the release. The updated guideline places an emphasis on long-term benefits of treatment, which is a deviation from the 2016 guideline that highlighted short-term benefits of treatment.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has released an updated clinical practice guideline for the management of carpal tunnel syndrome.

“While the 2016 guideline covered several recommendations for the short-term effects of [carpal tunnel syndrome] CTS treatment, our workgroup chose to focus on long-term patient outcomes as shifts in health care require a focus on cost-effective, high-quality and patient-centered care,” Lauren Shapiro, MD, co-chair of the AAOS guideline development group, said in the release. “This update provides physicians and patients with clear recommendations to optimize outcomes while minimizing unnecessary interventions.”

Key updates from the new guideline include recommendations for the use of the CTS-6 evaluation tool, the use of local anesthesia alone for carpal tunnel release, as well as the use of NSAIDs and/or acetaminophen following carpal tunnel release for postoperative pain management.
