The National Athletic Trainers’ Association hosted a virtual media briefing to update its recommendations for the management of sport-related concussions, according to a press release.
The National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) had last updated its recommendations for concussion management in 2014.
Intended as a document to bridge the gap between the 2014 position statement and the current state of concussion evidence, the document features more than 25 new and updated recommendations based on published literature, recommendations from other organizations and discrepancies between clinical practice and policies from older documents. According to the release, the new recommendations focus on education, assessment advances, prognostic recovery indicators, mental health considerations, return to academics, and exercise, activity and rehabilitation strategies. The recommendations also include important updates about driving after a concussion and the use of vision or vestibulo-ocular assessments.
“Athletic trainers (ATs) play a central role in the interdisciplinary medical team managing sport-related concussions,” Kathy Dieringer, EdD, LAT, ATC, president of NATA, said in the release. “The statement empowers ATs to make informed decisions about the evaluation and management of concussions and supports the professionals’ discretion in determining athlete care independent from nonmedical staff.”
