Patellofemoral joint education was notable at the recent ISAKOS Congress in Boston. Much of the education and research was presented by past and present Patellofemoral Foundation board members, award winners and traveling fellows.

Sessions

On the first day, Patellofemoral Foundation (PFF) board member Laurie Hiemstra, MD, PhD, FRCS(C), led off the ISAKOS Congress with patellofemoral updates. This was followed by PFF board member Daniel W. Green, MD, FAAP, PFF Lifetime Achievement Award winners Elizabeth Arendt, MD, and David H. Dejour, MD, and former PFF Traveling Fellows Nikolaos Paschos, MD, PhD, and Petri Silanpää, MD, PhD, speaking about pediatric patellofemoral problems.

PFF board member Andrew Cosgarea, MD, and Seth K. Sherman, MD, led the Sunday afternoon patellofemoral session, which was well attended, with an emphasis on more accurate planning for patellofemoral surgery. Former PFF Lifetime Achievement Award winner Vicente Sanchis-Alfonso, MD, PhD, former PFF traveling fellow and PFF board members Ryosuke Kuroda, MD, PhD, Jason L. Koh, MD, Julian A. Feller, FRACS, FAOrthA, and Hiemstra participated.

Hiemstra also introduced virtual reality (VR) in sports medicine with the VR technology of Danny Goel, MD, and ConMed. The PFF seeks to develop patellofemoral surgery VR modules to help world patellofemoral education.

Miho J. Tanaka, MD, a former PFF Award recipient, presented new information on the lateral to medial patella tracking path in patients with trochlea dysplasia. The only comprehensive course on the patellofemoral joint is now available from the PFF at www.patellofemoral.org.
