The Secondary Prevention Task Group of the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance released 15 recommendations for the prevention of osteoarthritis after an ACL injury, according to a press release from the National Athletic Trainers Association.
“While patients and health care professionals often focus on optimizing short-term outcomes after an ACL injury, there is an urgent need for prevention strategies to reduce the long-term burden of knee osteoarthritis,” Jeffrey B. Driban, PhD, ATC, CSCS, lead author of the task group, special and scientific staff member in the division of rheumatology, allergy and immunology at Tufts Medical Center and associate professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, said in the release. “The primary goal of prevention for this population is to identify problems at their earliest stages so that interventions can be started to slow or halt the progression toward long-term issues,” he added.
The recommendations include rehabilitation programs, gradual re-entry to sport-specific training, psychological skills training and socially supportive environments, according to the release.
“These recommendations describe a comprehensive approach to addressing a patient’s physical and mental well-being after an ACL injury,” Driban said. “We will also be rolling out consumer and professional education materials to encourage adoption of these guidelines. This collaborative and expansive approach to the secondary prevention of osteoarthritis can lead to greater quality of life outcomes for those involved in physical activity and sport.”
