VIDEO: Retrograde anterior column screw placement may risk genital injury to patients
Key takeaways:
- CT scans revealed percutaneous retrograde fixation of the anterior column may risk injury to external genitalia in adults.
- Screws may threaten injury to the clitoral body, corpus cavernosum and spermatic cord.
LAS VEGAS — In this video from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Joseph Patterson, MD, discussed the iatrogenic risk of genital injury after placement of anterior column screws.
“Up to 60% of women and 70% of men report some kind of sexual dysfunction after blunt pelvic fractures,” Patterson said. “There is concern that percutaneous placement of anterior column screws without some protection should, in adults, lead to a form of injury more than half the time,” he added.
