KOLOA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, Jack M. Bert, MD, spoke about why meniscal repair should be performed whenever possible.
“[This is for] young patients and even in middle-aged patients. Now, there is definitely evidence that shows root tears should be repaired, even in older patients with mild early osteoarthrosis. This is for several factors,” he said. “Number one is that patients that don’t have root repairs tend to progress to arthritis rapidly and go on to total knee arthroplasty in almost 33% of cases if they are not repaired as opposed to those who do have a repair. It is only 3.3% of those go on to have total knee replacement.”
Bert said the root is important in the sense that if it starts to extrude the meniscus, rapid degeneration of the joint occurs.
