PHILADELPHIA — In this video from Building a Successful Practice – Pennsylvania, Emily Ast, Esq., said asking questions up front when negotiating physician contracts ensures physicians commit to only providing expected services.
Early career orthopedic surgeons should ask questions up front in the negotiation process, “not committing to anything on the spot,” Ast told Healio at the meeting, which was organized by the Foundation for Physician Advancement.
When physicians review an agreement from a would-be employer, they should narrow the scope to what they will do for the employer. Obligations outside of that scope should be dealt with separately “so that you receive separate compensation for those items, as they will take away from your time for patient care,” she said.
In addition, Ast discussed how to handle some provisions that appear in agreements and which ones to be aware of, such as the requirement to pay back moving expenses or portions of signing bonuses when a physician leaves the employer.
