The European School for Training in Orthopaedics or ESTRO organized the first ESTRO Summer School/Basic Science Course in conjunction with the 18th EFORT Congress held in Vienna 31 May to 2 June 2017. The ESTRO organization would like to thank the EFORT president, EFORT executive committee and the faculty of ESTRO for their outstanding support. The organization appreciated the big scientific platform, as well as the friendship, made possible at the congress.
ESTRO is a European Union (EU) project, which is approved and granted by the European Commission in the form of an ERASMUS+ strategic partnership project, in the field of higher education, training and youth programs. In addition, ESTRO has received the official support of European Union of Medical Specialists-European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (UEMS-EBOT). Due to the close relations with and the contributions made by the UEMS-EBOT section, ESTRO will work to establish a common EU framework of reference in terms of methodology and content for orthopaedic and traumatology training and to design a mobility scheme for trainees and young residents in orthopaedics and traumatology that allows them to move between different EU institutions/departments for the purposes of placement. Furthermore, in terms of harmonization and standardization of the quality of education in Europe and preparation for EBOT and national board exams, combined intensive courses and virtual learning platforms with meetings, symposia and workshops are also planned. Five leading universities with high respect in the field of education are included in the project: Hacettepe University (Turkey); University of Bologna (Italy); Danube University Krems (Austria); Yildirim Beyazit University (Turkey); and Claude Bernard University of Lyon (France).
Educational modules
The ESTRO project consists of five modules for education: basic science; upper limb; lower limb; pediatric orthopaedics and spine; and orthopaedics oncology. Each partner university will organize a course for one of the modules. A crediting system will be applied for participation in the educational activities. All participants will gain credits according to their participation in the educational activities (courses, workshops, webinars, e-learning lectures, etc.) of ESTRO or ESTRO-supported activities. At the end of 1 year, a participant with enough credits will be eligible to apply to the fellowship mobility program. ESTRO Young Committee members are: Filippo Familiari (Italy); Luca La Verde (Italy); Danny Ryan (UK); Antonio Arenas (Spain); Bujar Shabani (Kosovo); Dafina Bytyqi (Kosovo); Florin Cioanca (Romania); Lukas Ernstbrunner (Switzerland); Olivier Flamand (Belgium); Philip Hitov (Bulgaria); Philip Roessler (Germany); Piotr Zagorsk (Poland) and Szymon Czech (Poland).
The 5-day course was held in Hainburg an der Donau, Austria, from 29 May to 30 May 2017, and then it continued during the EFORT Congress in Vienna from 31 May to 02 June 2017. The course chairmen were Prof. Stefan Nehrer (Danube University Krems, Austria), Prof. Gazi Huri (Hacettepe University, Turkey), and Prof. Mahmut Nedim Doral (Hacettepe University, Turkey). There were 23 scholarship recipients who were from different countries in Europe. The scholarship covers the cost of the ESTRO Basic Science course, registration for the annual EFORT Congress, the EFORT Comprehensive Review course and accommodations.
On the first day, the faculty held a 1-day biology session. At the end of the day, the faculty attended a dinner with the course participants at the Altes Kloster restaurant. The next day, the faculty gave presentations dealing with study design. The faculty focused in-depth on design, evidence and basic statistics, as well as on how to read and write a paper. During the third day, the group moved from Hainburg to Vienna covered biomechanics, engineering and biomaterials.
On the fourth day, the faculty addressed important topics about fundamentals and general orthopaedic science. On the last day, the scholarship recipients had the opportunity to attend the EFORT CRC course. The scholarship recipients also had the unique opportunity to attend the EFORT conference based on their areas of interest. The result was a 5-day dynamic and multidisciplinary discussion and presentation on basic science and future perspectives in orthopaedics. Moreover, strong friendships were created during the 5 days. Overall, it was an important professional, cultural and social event.
