ATLANTA — Many of the staff issues seen in eye care practices are rooted in a lack of trust, and it is up to practice leaders to remedy the situation, according to two clinicians at SECO.

“When there’s a lack of trust, that falls back on the leader to help build that trust,” Ted McElroy, OD, founder of Vision Source Tifton in Georgia, said in this Healio video.

McElroy and Michael A. Kling, OD, president and CEO at Invision Optometry in San Diego, facilitated a discussion on leadership as part of SECO’s MedPro360 program, of which Healio was the official media partner.

“Leadership is messy,” McElroy said, “but we are responsible to these individuals.”

“We got taught to be good eye doctors, but we never got taught how to manage people, how to run a business,” Kling said, adding that this session gave colleagues the opportunity to collaborate ... “and commiserate to some degree.”
