VIDEO: Secondary glaucomas require more careful follow-up
ATLANTA — Secondary glaucomas are related to aqueous outflow and can require closer management, Mitch Ibach, OD, FAAO, said at SECO 2024.
“[Secondary glaucomas] tend to be a more volatile form of glaucoma,” Ibach, who practices at Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, said in this Healio video. “They want to progress more, so I’m more careful with my follow-up in these patients.”
Secondary glaucomas include pseudoexfoliation, pigment dispersion, uveitis, neovascular and steroid-response glaucoma, according to Ibach.
He said in all of these cases the conventional outflow pathway is blocked, “but you want to remove whatever is the culprit for blocking it.”
