VIDEO: Every optometrist can implement myopia control

LAS VEGAS – Every primary care optometrist can provide their pediatric patients with optimal visual function throughout their lives by offering myopia control, Valerie M. Kattouf, OD, told Healio at Vision Expo West.

Clinicians can halt or slow myopia progression through the use of orthokeratology, multifocal contact lenses and atropine, alone or in combination, Kattouf, chief of the pediatric binocular vision clinic at the Illinois Eye Institute, said. Myopia control spectacle lenses are on the horizon.

Every pediatric patient is not a candidate for myopia control, however.

“If patients are 14 and just starting with myopia, we’re not treating it,” Kattouf said. “When they start young, that’s when we want to work to halt the progression.”

She added, “Our patients need to understand that myopia control is a tool for vision, just like orthodontics for dentistry and teeth.”
