ATLANTA — Treatment and procedure options that offer both cosmetic and functional ocular improvements have increased in recent years, providing better quality-of-life care, according to a presenter at this year’s SECO meeting.

“We’re seeing scope expansion and changes occur across the country with what doctors of optometry can do,” Chris Wroten, OD, told Healio in an interview. “We’re seeing an enhanced opportunity to provide aesthetic and cosmetic in addition to functional treatments for our patients.”

Wroten said that some of these opportunities include nonsurgical options for lid tightening and lifting.

Specifically, he mentioned the new Upneeq eye drop (oxymetazoline HCL ophthalmic solution 0.1%; RVL Pharmaceuticals), a topical solution that lifts the eyelid.

Wroten said that other nonsurgical options for cosmetics and function include:

  • Botox injections for complications such as essential blepharospasm;
  • Intense pulsed light for treating dry eye, ocular surface issues and ocular rosacea; and
  • Radiofrequency for lid tightening with devices like the TempSure Envi (Cynosure/Hologic).

“There’s a wide range of things on the market now that are new technologies, new procedures and therapies that we can bring to our patients,” Wroten said.

He said it is also important to advise patients about proper hygiene and recommend the use of appropriate SPF protectants in the sun to avoid thermal damage.

“We can now enhance our patients’ quality of life cosmetically and functionally and improve their life along with our satisfaction in providing care on a day-to-day basis,” Wroten concluded.
