TAMPA, Fla. — Cataract surgeons should have their OR ready for any kind of emergency to make complex cases feel more routine, according to a presenter at the Telling It Like It Is meeting.

“If you have your OR stocked, you can be ready with an emergency plan,” Nicole R. Fram, MD, said.

According to Fram, ORs should have devices such as capsular tension rings, capsule retractors, Ahmed capsular tension segments and a backup three-piece IOL on hand in the event of IOL tilting or compromised zonules during surgery.

Fram also recommended using Gore-Tex or 7-0 Prolene to help with flanged IOL fixation.

In addition, practicing with simulation models can help surgeons prepare for complications that may arise. Knowing that the patient is stable during surgery will help surgeons continue through complications more seamlessly.

“What you can do is practice ahead of time to have your best technique in the event that something happens,” she said.
