Gagandeep Brar, MD
Gagandeep Brar, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the division of hematology and medical oncology and oncologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian, spoke with Healio about screening for gastric cancer, as well as new treatment options she has on her radar.
In this video, Brar discusses:
- Screening protocols in countries with a high prevalence of gastric cancer, such as Japan and Korea, while also noting that there are no universal screening guidelines for the general population in the United States;
- Red flags for genetic counseling to identify genetic syndromes predisposing people to gastric cancer and recommended prophylactic measures these patients might take;
- Patient subgroups that are the most difficult to treat, such as patients who have “exhausted” all standard therapies;
- Developing a treatment plan for patients, emphasizing the need to “include patients in all treatment making decisions”;
- Findings from multiple trials evaluating treatments for gastric cancer; and
- The use of targeted therapy in the advance stage setting, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages.
