Handelsman, MD professor of abdominal surgery and program director of the complex general surgical oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, discussed:
- existing challenges in diagnosing gastric cancer, including “vague symptomology” and lack of surveillance due to lesser prevalence in western countries;
- disparities in care, access and screening;
- the increasing utilization of minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as robotic gastrectomy; and
- the importance of acknowledging the prognostic implications of a gastric cancer diagnosis.
